XLIII

Don April 11th, 2009

XLIII Wordsworth wrote an endless poem in blank verse on” the growth of a poet’s mind.”  I shall attempt a more modest feat for a more distracted age: a blog, “Things which a Lifetime of Trying to Be a Poet has Taught Me.”

I wonder why more people have not experimented with trying to combine the effects of Alliterative Meter with rhyme?  Maybe because not many poets are left who are minimally competent in either.  The richness that can result is kind of like pecan pie: you have to take it in small doses.  This one seems about right.

 VISION

Think how the Moon, the made Enchantress,

Crowned by the silver of covering cloud,

Rides o’er the shimmering, shivering sea0waves

                                                No ship’s prow has plowed . . .

Think how the sound of singing voices

Chanting softly, a sign in the air,

Mingles its notes with the moonlight shining

                                                On Hesperus’ Garden fair.

Think of the Moon and the surf and sea-magic,

And they will take you there.
